About Shapefile format

Shapefile (SHP) is the de-facto standard vector format developed by Esri. A shapefile is actually a collection of at least three files: .shp (geometry), .dbf (attributes), and .shx (index). Despite its age, it remains the most widely-supported format across GIS desktop software including ArcGIS and QGIS. Shapefiles support points, lines, and polygons but are limited to 2 GB in size and 10-character field names. When sharing shapefiles, always bundle them into a .zip archive.

Frequently asked questions

Q.What files do I need to upload for a Shapefile?

Bundle at minimum .shp, .dbf, and .shx into a ZIP and upload the ZIP. Maparz extracts and converts automatically. The .prj file is recommended to preserve the coordinate reference system.

Q.Will attribute data be preserved when converting a Shapefile?

Yes. All attribute columns from the .dbf file are preserved in the output — GeoJSON, GeoPackage, KML, and GML retain attributes. CSV exports include X and Y coordinate columns.

Q.Can I convert a Shapefile without QGIS or ArcGIS?

Yes. Maparz runs GDAL server-side — there is nothing to install. Upload your Shapefile ZIP, choose an output format, and download the result.
