About the GeoPackage format

GeoPackage (GPKG) is a modern, open standard format defined by the OGC that stores geospatial data in a single SQLite database file. It supports both vector and raster data, multiple layers per file, field name lengths up to 64 characters, and virtually any coordinate reference system. GeoPackage is endorsed by the OGC as the preferred replacement for Shapefile. It is supported by QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, GDAL, and PostGIS. Its SQLite base makes it portable and queryable without a server.

Strengths

  • +Single file containing multiple layers
  • +No field name length limit
  • +Supports vector and raster in one file
  • +SQLite-based — portable and queryable

Limitations

  • Less universally supported than Shapefile in older tools
  • Binary format — not human-readable

Frequently asked questions

Q.Can I view multi-layer GeoPackage files?

Maparz previews the first vector layer in the file. To work with additional layers, convert the GPKG to GeoJSON or Shapefile using a layer-specific tool like QGIS.

Q.What is GeoPackage used for?

GeoPackage is an OGC-standard SQLite database that stores vector and raster geospatial data. It is the preferred modern replacement for Shapefile, supporting long field names and multiple layers in one file.

Q.Can I convert GeoPackage to Shapefile or GeoJSON?

Yes. After the preview loads, select your output format and click Convert. GPKG → GeoJSON and GPKG → Shapefile are among the most common conversions.

Q.Do I need any software installed?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Maparz uses GDAL on the server to process GeoPackage files.
